Toshiba, as well as Acer and Compaq, aren't any where in the running...they're all cheap and breakdown regularly, for software/hardware conflictions of one type or another...

Now I'm going to recommend a few different Laptops, that you will be satisfied with:

Dell - Studio Laptop with Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor T6400 - Ruby Red @ $729.99

Gateway - Laptop with Intel® Centrino® Processor Technology - Black @ $629.99

HP Pavilion dv4-1220us NoteBook AMD Turion X2 RM-72(2.10GHz) 14.1" Wide XGA 4GB Memory 250GB HDD 5400rpm DVD Super Multi ATI Radeon HD 3200 @ $599.99

I am sure that anyone of these will meet all your needs and you'll be content in their performances, as well...

I am in hopes that this was of assistance to you...

I'm a A+ Certified Tech.

I have owned this Dell 6400 laptop for over three years and the reliability and stability has been put to the test. I play guitar so I record guitar. Let me tell you, recording audio in real-time takes alot of performance to get true, clear, stable performances. Today this laptop has 2.5gb of RAM and 80gb harddrive. I've installed all the latest softwares from audio recording to MS WORD to Adobe reader. This computer hands down is perfect. HP isn't bad either. You get the bang for your buck. My GF bought one for $800, comes with briefcase for the computer, headphones, 2gb ram, 250gb hard drive, dvd burner/cd burner/ light scriber... oh, my computer has cd burner/ dvd player, 2gb ram, 80gb hard drive, sd card reader, 4 USB slots, just look it up. Dell inspiron E1505 (6400) I'd personally get that cause it has to be around the 600 dollar mark by now, it was 900 3 years ago. OH its vista or XP capable.

brand does not have anything to do -they are all the same with different case, more or less-. look up for processor specifications -speed, number of cores, cache size- (if they use the same then compare data bus speed and memory type. main size of memory does count also, but you can customize it to fit your needs)

I can't tell you what is best but I can tell you about what I have got.

I began studying via distance in November, 2007 and so we decided we needed a second computer. I looked around for what I felt was best value for money. A DELL laptop clearly seemed to come out on top based on the numbers eg. gig

I got the DELL and it has been amazing. I have never had a single fault with it, its never let me down, has done everything I have needed. While my computer skills have developed somewhat since I got the computer when I got it I wasn't all that good.

I was able to set up the computer and get going even with very little computer smarts. It is simple and easy to use. Now I am using the computer for some fairly advanced animation programs and it all keeps up no worries.

I would highly recommend DELL. Since I got this computer we have had to replace our main home computer which we also replaced with a DELL.

Don't ever ever ever buy a dell, worst company ever, bad business ethics. Anyways they build their computers to fail after a certain amount of time. For 600 you might look into buying an acer check out http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2034940032%204021&bop=And&ActiveSearchResult=True&Order=PRICE find the one with the best spec's in your price range. I would stay away from Asus products also.

They are closely matched, but sometimes you can get a good sale, or free shipping, or software package. One warning, I have an upgraded ($2,000) laptop with Vista, which I absolutley HATE, I have since bought one for $700 with XP, and I like it much more. (both are dells, but I also own Toshibas and HPs (I tend to prefer Dell)
